Camino Song
From the city of St Francis,
To the city of St James,
From the great Pacific highway,
To little streets with Spanish names.
She came in search of something
And to walk the pilgrim road.
I met her near Logrono -
Never saw my world explode.
Pilgrim days of toil and burden,
Endless paths and broken wills
Across the stark, wind-scarred Meseta,
Above the high Galician hills.
Pilgrim nights of wine and laughter,
Star-drenched skies and holy ground.
We shared our food, our pain, our wonder,
Hearts afire, for glory bound
Camino breeze, blow softly,
Protect her sweet face from the heat,
Camino path, slope gently,
Lay soft grass beneath her feet.
Pilgrim hearts, beat bravely,
We’re going to make it through somehow,
Santiago, por favor, your blessing on us now.
Then one morning, bathed in sunshine,
High above the skyline rose
Santiago’s great cathedral
Calling pilgrims to repose.
Later on, beside the altar,
Giving thanks for blessings won,
Sensed a deeper, sadder ending,
Something over, scarce begun.
Camino breeze, blow softly,
Protect her sweet face from the heat,
Camino path, slope gently,
Lay soft grass beneath her feet.
Pilgrim hearts, beat bravely,
We’re going to make it through somehow,
Santiago, por favor, your blessing on us now.
Midnight arches in the old town
Shipwrecked lovers last embrace
Locked together, no words spoken
Endings are too hard to face
Early morning, eyes raised skyward,
Pilgrim watching planes ascend
Now he starts a new camino
Without a soul, without an end.
Camino breeze, blow softly,
Protect her sweet face from the heat,
Camino path, slope gently,
Lay soft grass beneath her feet.
Pilgrim hearts, beat bravely,
We’re going to make it through somehow,
Santiago, por favor, your blessing on us now.
Santiago, por favor, your blessing on us now.
Whatever it Takes
Whatever good I’ve ever done, I have done with the help of you
When I was down and forsaken your spirit made me feel brand new
Sure as the night time is over and the dawn comes shining through
I’ll do whatever it takes to show my love for you
You took me on a journey to travel down a better road
You were there beside me to ease my heavy load
You were there beside me no matter what I had to face
You took me from the darkness and helped me to a better place
You gave me the vision to see what only I could do
I’ll do whatever it takes to show my love for you
I was all on my own and out in the wilderness lost
I’ll do whatever it takes and I won’t count the cost
You gave hope to the hopeless and you never gave up on me
When I was blind and abandoned you opened up my eyes to see
You made me a promise and I know that your word is true
I’ll do whatever it takes to show my love for you
The River
River always rollin’ on somewhere,
River always rollin’ on somewhere,
Sin like stone, is hard to bear,
River shining like a prayer
River always rollin’ on somehow.
River always looking where to bend,
River always looking where to bend,
Man don’t like to compromise.
Seems like weakness to his eyes,
River always looking where to bend.
River always rollin’ on somehow,
River always rollin’ on somehow,
Drop a stone into the river,
Where it lands, it lies forever.
River always rollin’ on somewhere.
Everybody needs to find their river,
Deep inside the heart is where it flows,
Listen to the music of your river,
Follow it whichever way it goes.
River wanting nothing but to flow,
River wanting nothing but to flow,
Man consumed by lust and greed,
Always wants what he don’t need,
River wanting nothing but to flow.
Every river sings a melody,
Every river sings a melody,
Man has just one small sad note,
Dying as it leaves his throat,
Every river sings a melody.
Everybody needs to find their river,
Deep inside the heart is where it flows.
Listen to the music of your river,
Follow it whichever way it goes.
Let the river bring your heart some peace,
Let the river bring your heart some peace,
Feel your cares being washed away
Find new hope, a brand new day,
Let the river bring your heart some peace.
Storms Over Jupiter
There’s not a great deal going down
As I pass through Union Square,
Crossing Geary and Van Ness
The usual traffic’s there.
And all the way to Richmond
There’s nothing new to show
The cosmic change that happened here
A little while ago
Down along Haight-Ashbury
No one seems to care,
Where once the flower children
Wore garlands in their hair.
They, at least, would understand
And know just what to say.
But flower children turned to dust,
My baby’s gone away.
Where are the icebergs in Atlanta
Monsoons over Maine,
So everyone across the land
Can understand my pain,
There should be hurricanes in Manhattan
Landslides in L.A.
To let the population know
My baby’s gone away
I wanna see snow in Sausilito,
Blizzards on Lombard,
And all around the Golden Gate
Hailstones falling hard
Lightning bolts come crashing down
From Mission to South Bay
To let all San Francisco know,
My baby’s gone away.
What’s going on up in the sky –
I cant believe it’s true
The moon and stars in harmony,
The sky a velvet blue.
And far beyond in deeper space
The planetary ballet
Does no one in the cosmos know
My baby’s gone away?
Why can’t Mars collide with Venus?
Saturn crash and burn?
Halle’s comet change its course
Never to return?
Solar flares to burn the sky
Blot out the Milky Way
Storms over Jupiter,
My baby’s gone away.
My baby’s gone away.
My baby’s gone away.
There should be storms over Jupiter,
My baby’s gone away.
The Sit-Down Demand
The Greensboro Four were men who were determined
To satisfy a deep rooted thirst
Their aim was to gain a step towards equality
In the Woolworths store on February first
They took their seats with dignified faces
Courage and conviction that never stopped
They planted a seed as they took those places
For the sit-ins at the counters in the coffee shops
CHORUS
All they wanted was to buy a cup of coffee
It didn‘t really matter either black or white
They sat down at the counter and they placed their order
When they were provoked they refused to fight
The very next morning they returned to the counter
And the protests were spreading all across the land
People turned out throughout the south of the nation
For what became known as the sit-down demand
As they came to fill the vacant seating
They faced discrimination and distress
Some curled up like a ball and took a beating
Passively resisting until they had success
CHORUS
And so the mood was set and influenced the nation
To challenge injustice and to have their say
Throughout the hatred and scorn remained the aspiration
To bring about change in a peaceful way
The weeks went by, the atmosphere was loaded
But they held on to the principles that made them proud
The wall between the races was being eroded
By the dignity they showed in ignoring the crowd
CHORUS...
I Play the Blues
I’m walking, walking till the sun goes down
Searchin‘ but I know you can’t be found
And I’m lonesome, lonesome ‘cause you ain’t around
Now I’m talking, talking to myself again
Just one question weavin‘ in and out of my brain
Askin’ why you had to leave again
I play the blues, play the blues night and day
I play the blues, ever since you went away
I play the blues, there is nothing more to say
I’ve been thinkin’, thinkin’ ‚bout the love we had
And it hurts me, hurts me and it makes me sad
And I’m wondrin’ why you treated me so bad
I play the blues, play the blues night and day
I play the blues, ever since you went away
I play the blues, there is nothing more to say
I play the blues, there is nothing more to say
Big Society
If today was a fish, I’d throw it straight back
Our colourful world is reverting to black
Hate’s on full throttle, while love’s on the rack
If you’re old and in care, you’d be safer in Iraq.
But it’s all right, people, step up and take a bow.
We’re all part of big society now!
If today is a zebra, its pyjamas are rippin’,
Politicians steal millions, they call it house-flippin’,
To make it sound trivial, oh God, am I trippin’?
But for breaking a window, they’re bringin’ back whippin’
But it’s all right, people, step up and take a bow.
We’re all part of big society now!
If today is a child, don’t be born in Iran,
It’s next to be purged in the Grim Reaper’s plan,
It makes our world safer and richer - Oh man,
At least they wore hoods in the old Ku Klux Klan!
But it’s all right, people, step up and take a bow.
We’re all part of big society now!
If today has a truth, it’s our leaders betrayed us,
They all crawl at the feet of a man who’d degrade us,
God made us with care, looks like he’s mislaid us,
It would be no surprise now if he came back and unmade us
But it’s all right, people, step up and take a bow.
We’re all part of big society now!
But it’s all right, people, step up and take a bow.
We’re all part of big society now!
I'll Watch Over You
When you can see no light
in the dark of night I will be with you
Just like the eagle flies on the mountain high I‘ll watch over you
When you feel alone and
your heart is in danger
When you are far from home
and love is a stranger
In desert land, new orchards grow
Where living springs of water flow
When you can see no light
in the dark of night I will be with you
Just like the eagle flies on the mountain high I‘ll watch over you
When the waters surround you
and you have burdens to bear
And you feel forsaken when
there is no one there
Then when your soul is tormented
and sadness is near
The dark of the night time
will bring you no fear
When you can see no light
in the dark of night I will be with you
Just like the eagle flies on the mountain high I‘ll watch over you
When your spirit is troubled
and peace is hard to find
No power or wealth is like the quiet mind
When the curtains close at the end of the day
All you take with you is what you gave away
Love's Old Wishing Star
You can’t blame a girl for trying,
When the boy she loves ain’t buying,
But I find it mystifying,
And rather bizarre
That she’ll spend the whole night sighing,
Instead of just goodbye-ing,
And all because she made a vow
To Love’s old wishing star.
You can’t blame a guy not talking,
When the girl he loves starts mocking
But I really find it shocking
Quite frankly, too far
That instead of simply walking
And letting love come knocking,
He’ll stay because he’s put his faith
In Love’s old wishing star
Love’s old wishing star,
Way up in the blue beyond,
Dropping beams,
To fill our hearts with hopes
Beyond our wildest dreams.
But in this sad old world we live in,
Way down below,
It’s good to carry hope inside
And feel our hearts aglow,
And that is why,
Through all the ages,
And places near and far,
Young lovers lift their eyes to heaven
And Love’s old wishing star.
The Walls of Luca
Slipped inside an envelope,
tucked into a book,
hidden in a bottom drawer,
Away.
Little scrap of paper,
from a different life,
discarded and forgotten,
till today.
(The fragment of an old song,
A verse or two, no more.
Still enough to let me see
How it was before.)
Gazed once again on plans I’d made
So many years gone by,
dreaming of life’s prizes
to be won,
when young men bold as Icarus
earth’s limits to transcend
take dead aim and head straight for
the sun.
But I must confess I haven’t done
much planning for a while,
just walk the walls of Lucca
and think about her smile.
I must admit I haven’t done
Much chasing for the prize
Just walk the walls of Lucca
And think about her eyes.
The fragment of an old song.
some lines so long unseen
just enough to let me see
the man I might have been.
